When Do You Need a Consulting Arborist?

Many tree decisions involve significant cost, risk, or irreversible consequences. An independent expert opinion protects your interests when you're facing:

  • Tree preservation planning before construction or renovation
  • A dispute with a neighbor over tree responsibility or damage
  • Insurance documentation for storm damage or liability claims
  • Species selection for new plantings — right tree, right place
  • A removal recommendation you're not sure you believe

Our consulting is independent. If your tree doesn't need work, we'll tell you — and there's never an obligation to use Urban Tree for follow-up services.

“Very quick service at a very fair price. We had a large hickory fall on a steep slope close to our house on Tuesday evening. I called Wednesday morning and they had it fully removed by Friday.”
Jeff Jolley · Google Review
“Professional. That's the one-word description of Urban Tree. One call and an estimator arrived to prepare a quote that afternoon. The workers arrived with all the equipment required to do the job safely. Very highly recommended.”
Steve Fearnow · Google Review
“Would absolutely recommend Urban Tree to anyone looking for quality work! This is our second time using their service and they show up to impress. Not a trace to be found after they finished the job.”

Consulting Questions, Answered

How is consulting different from a free estimate?

An estimate prices work we'd perform; a consultation is independent advice. Our consulting findings are the same whether or not they lead to work for Urban Tree — that independence is the point, especially for disputes, claims, and second opinions.

Can a consulting report be used in court?

Yes. Reports meet legal documentation standards with detailed findings, photographic evidence, and professional opinions grounded in arboricultural science. Our arborists have provided depositions and expert testimony in cases involving property damage, neighbor disputes, construction damage, and personal injury.

I've been told my tree needs to be removed. Should I get a second opinion?

If you're unsure, yes. Removal is irreversible and expensive, and we've assessed many trees that were recommended for removal but could be preserved with the right care. An independent assessment either confirms the recommendation or gives you a better option.

Can you help protect trees during construction?

Yes. Pre-construction preservation planning — root zone protection, grading guidance, and species-appropriate clearances — is one of the most valuable times to involve an arborist. It's far cheaper to protect a mature tree than to lose one.

How long does a consultation take?

Most individual consultations take 1 to 2 hours on-site with verbal findings during the visit. Written reports are typically delivered within 5 to 10 business days; complex projects involving litigation support or development planning can span several weeks.

What happens after the consultation?

You get clear recommendations and, when applicable, the written report. If work is recommended — pruning, treatment, removal, or support systems — we can estimate it, but the consulting opinion is independent of service delivery and there's no obligation.
